Shooting in Kansas City leaves one person dead and 21 injured close to Super Bowl parade

A shooting in Missouri following the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl victory parade has resulted in one fatality and 21 injuries.

Authorities stated that among the wounded, eight were in critical condition while seven others sustained serious injuries.

Fortunately, all nine children injured are expected to recover.

Police have apprehended three suspects in connection with the shooting.

The incident occurred west of Union Station, the parade's endpoint in downtown Kansas City. Thousands of spectators, including Kansas City Chiefs players, were present when the shots were fired.

As chaos erupted, the crowd, including the city's mayor and his family, sought shelter.

Kansas City Police Chief Stacey Graves reported a swift response from officers, who immediately initiated an investigation. The Fire Department provided medical assistance to the injured.

Over 800 police officers were on site to oversee the parade, with the fire department also on standby for medical emergencies.

During a news conference held on Wednesday, Chief Graves revealed that 22 individuals had been shot, resulting in one fatality, and three individuals were taken into custody.

A local radio station confirmed that one of its DJs, Lisa Lopez, was among the deceased.

The surviving victims were swiftly transported to three local hospitals, with those in critical condition receiving immediate medical attention within 10 minutes of the incident.

Nine children, ranging from six to 15 years old, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently under care at Children's Mercy Hospital. Chief nursing officer Stephanie Meyer described their arrival as filled with fear.

In addition to gunshot wounds, local hospitals are also treating individuals injured during the ensuing chaos and stampede.

City officials refrained from disclosing the victims' identities or providing details about the arrested suspects, including the motive behind the shooting.

According to a law enforcement source cited by CBS News, the incident stemmed from a heated argument escalating into violence, ruling out terrorism as a motive.

Police are actively investigating the incident, urging witnesses or anyone with pertinent information to come forward.

The city is deeply saddened by the tragedy and remains committed to seeking justice for the victims and their families.
