Jose Altuve, known as Houston's "Little Big Man," secures a substantial contract extension
The shortest player in the major leagues, José Altuve, has landed a contract extension that defies his stature.
On Tuesday, the Houston Astros revealed that they've offered a five-year, $125 million deal to Altuve, which stretches until 2029. This includes a $15 million signing bonus. Starting after the current season, Altuve will receive $30 million annually from 2025 to 2027, and $10 million each in 2028 and 2029.
Before this extension, Altuve was set to earn $26 million in 2024 under his previous contract, which would have expired after this season.
This marks the third extension for Altuve, who has remained loyal to the Astros throughout his career.
Altuve, who will turn 34 in May, boasts an impressive record. He has led the American League in hits four times, batting thrice, and stolen bases twice. Despite being listed at 5'6", Altuve has managed to score 100 runs in four different seasons, with a career-high of 31 home runs in a single season.
As an eight-time All-Star, Altuve has claimed six Silver Sluggers and earned two World Series rings. However, his performance dipped last year due to injuries, including a broken thumb during the World Baseball Classic, and later, an oblique strain. Despite this, he still managed to hit .335 in the second half of the season, aiding the Astros in reaching the American League Championship Series for the seventh consecutive season.
